Emotions on canvas, in colour. Between Anjolie Ela Menon’s languid nudes and Arpana Caur’s metaphoric emancipation of women from the clutches of congested concrete jungles, art consultant Dr Alka Pande’s curated exhibition of visual art, Navarasa, at the Capital’s Visual Arts Gallery, showcased paintings by 30 well-known artists including Amit Ambalal, Atul Dodiya, Jatin Das, Jayshree Burman, Jitish Kallat, Paresh Maity and others. Mounted as a fund-raiser for the empowerment of artisans and craftsmen from Gujarat’s Bhuj, these creations were a contemporary interrogation of the definition of the nine forms of rasa. If a semi-draped female form in Menon’s Shringara rasa was open to avid gaze, it was also a symbolic convergence of the visual with the performing arts—dancers Sonal Mansingh, Gitanjali Kak and Lakshmi Vishwanathan performing the Navrasas at the inauguration.
