Although the crisis has been averted for now, Deshmukh's problems are far from over. Capitalising on the Congress high command's disappointment with his ineptitude in handling the crisis, his detractors within the party have begun a whisper campaign against him.
According to party sources, the anti-Deshmukh lobby is being spearheaded by chief ministerial aspirant Patangrao Kadam. Other prominent detractors include Rajya Sabha member Suresh Kalmadi, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Govindrao Adik and senior leader Sushilkumar Shinde. The high command may not oblige immediately in the interest of political stability.
