When The Nib Was Straight

  • Mashal (1984) Dilip Kumar plays a committed journalist who is sacked due to political pressure. He relocates to a slum, brings out his own paper and reforms the local crook Anil Kapoor. A twist shows Dilip Kumar take to violent ways.
  • Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla are two competing television journos, always hunting for scoops, but eventually come together for a good cause
  • Main Azad Hoon (1989) Shabana Azmi plays an opportunistic columnist who writes articles on a fictitious activist, then pays a common man (Amitabh Bachchan) to ‘play' the role. His sincerity awakens her conscience.
  • New Delhi Times (1986) Shashi Kapoor plays an honest, fearless journalist who withstands  pressure from politicians and media barons
  • Lakshya (2004) Preity Zinta plays television journalist Romila Dutta covering the Kargil War.

The irony is hard to miss. For those who can recall an earlier time, that is. A time when hold-all phrases like ‘infotainment’ and the ‘media’ had not yet gained currency; when there were films and there was the press and the latter was wont to use words like ‘mindless’, ‘regressive’, ‘repetitive’, ‘cliched’ and ‘formula’ to describe the former.
