For Form's Sake

Young Turks are on the prowl. But Virender Sehwag isn't wasting his time in a big sulk.

Coach Greg Chappell acted fair: he pointed out that Sehwag was not the only batting concern for India. He also recognised that there was little competitive cricket prior to the World Cup for Sehwag to blaze his way back into the side. But chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar's plain-spoken critique was pungent enough for Sehwag to be taken aback initially—at least that is the impression of those who know Sehwag.

"Sehwag has been out of form for quite some time," Vengsarkar said as the team was picked for the first two games against the West Indies. "I'd like to say that he has to go back to the nets and sort out his cricket, his batting basically. He's a fine player and I'm sure he will come back." Vengsarkar reportedly told a few in Mumbai cricket circles that he had never known a captain plead so strongly for an out-of-form player to be retained in the playing XI as Rahul Dravid did in the final Test at Cape Town. At that juncture, he relented—one last time. After India beat the West Indies in Cuttack last week, Vengsarkar was almost disdainful as he dismissed the Sehwag question. "He will have to wait for a while." As one of the 30 probables for the World Cup, he's not entirely beyond the pale. But it's pretty much the fringe.
