The recent flooding of Brahmaputra in Assam, which left over 50 people dead, also caused havoc in Kaziranga National Park. The Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC), the only such centre in any national park in the country, rescued many rhino calves separated from their parents who had perished in the floods. But the centre didn’t have enough resources to feed them. A rhino baby needs at least three kilos of milk powder every day apart from other nutrients and medicines. The centre, headed by Rathin Barman, acted quickly, put out ads and news stories in the media asking people to adopt the calves for two years, and within days most of them were taken care of.
