Most Calcuttans have stories to tell about the several Mughlai eateries that populate Park Circus—of how a vegetarian tasted his first biriyani and kababs at Shiraz or Zeeshan, or of how the queue outside Arsalan resembled a railway booking line on some Saturday evening. These are enormously popular setups, with modestly priced food and cult-status kababs. So it takes courage to go fine dining in the area, and Krazy Kebab deserves a carrot for bravery—if nothing else. The lamps here are ornate, the decor minimalist, and the menu vast. The mutton galoti kabab, it said, was a speciality, but the meat was a bit coarse; so we turned instead to the adrak ke panje, which, happily enough, gave us enough succulent mutton to sink our teeth into. The roomali roti was soft enough to make up for a clearly undercooked murg tikka malai kabab. After our meal, we were asked to choose a number from a large fish bowl. I picked 23 and got to take home a gaudy leather credit-card holder. And in it, my cards shall remain, because Shiraz, Arsalan and Zeeshan all prefer cash.
