Madhu Sharma's hysterical late-night statement in Chandigarh was a TV event and set the alarm bells ringing for the BJP in Delhi. What was shocking was the intemperate language used by the wife of the suspended Haryana IG (prisons), who even went so far as to say that her husband was hiding at the same place where Mahajan used to meet Shivani. While she was not wanting in emotion, Madhu was zero when it came to evidence.
Judging from the muted reactions in political circles—both the BJP and the Opposition—no one is buying Madhu Sharma's allegations of political involvement in the murder. Even the Delhi police has denied it. In fact, one theory doing the rounds is that the charges against the BJP minister are being levelled merely to deflect attention from Sharma and browbeat the government into hushing up the case. Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani's statement that the charges were malicious and intended to derail the probe has generally been accepted across the board.
