Rumble In The Jungle

The Gill Effect hasn't worn off. A revamped police force helps bring back a tenuous calm.

As many as 2,213 arrests were made after May 10 by the new team put together by Gill. A 50-year-old man who allegedly raped and killed a woman in the Naroda Patia locality in Ahmedabad was arrested on May 14. Fresh FIRs have been registered and formalities have been completed in 99 cases. Commenting on the concern over registration of blank FIRs by the police, additional commissioner Satish Sharma says: "The situation will be amended. We have been instructed to register new names that have been excluded from the FIRs during the process of investigations. Also, in FIRs where serious offences have been clubbed together with non-serious ones, cases will be separated wherever it is possible."

In the city's streets and relief camps, there is a perceptible change in public confidence in the police—though most residents remain wary about how long the peace will last. Even at the Dariyakhan Ghummat relief camp—which has seen frequent attacks by mobs even though it's just a stone's throw from the police commissioner's office—the mood is more optimistic than it was a fortnight ago. "People still don't feel safe enough to leave the camps. But there is a world of difference in our trust in the police after the commissioner was changed. The attacks have stopped. There is hope now that peace will return to Ahmedabad," says camp organiser Inamul Haq Iraqi. This week, the victims housed in the city's relief camps even felt emboldened to collect belongings from their homes, accompanied, of course, by police escorts.
