The report, it is learnt, will be submitted in the budget session of Parliament and has been put together after the MPs travelled extensively. "We went to West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, visited schools and invited sociologists, psychologists, educationists, teachers and religious leaders from Muslim organisations to take part in the debate as it was a serious issue that needed to be addressed," Venkaiah Naidu told Outlook. He says the dominant mood among the MPs was one of scepticism towards the curriculum.
It will be recalled that the AEP manual, produced by UNICEF in conjunction with National Aids Control Organisation (NACO), was scrapped last year by the state governments of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Kerala for its alleged explicit content about safe sex . On their part, the MPs feel there is need for a scientific/healthy education. But, they are unanimous in their view that such a curriculum should be more on the lines of a study of biology rather than sex.
