Life is a bed of flowers for 26 of the 90 families in Assam's Kusumbil village. The area, under the shadow of Bodo militants till recently, has scripted an amazing story of grit and enterprise. A six-hour drive from Guwahati, Kusumbil would have passed off as an idyllic village, but for the colourful plots—these attracted attention a few weeks ago when some paddy farmers-turned-floriculturists harvested their first crop. "I invested Rs 40,000 last season and made a profit of Rs 50,000," smiles Harimohan Biswas, who scripted the village's flowery tale. Two decades ago, while on a visit to Bengal, Harimohan saw his brother-in-law make a living cultivating flowers. He launched headlong into the venture. Says he: "I read books, consulted floriculturists in West Bengal and Guwahati. From the very first year, I achieved moderate success." Now, more than a quarter of Kusumbil's families cultivate flowers in over 50 bighas of land. The blooms are sold within the state, but negotiations are on with importers from other states as well. Last month, Biswas formed Rupjyoti, a floriculturists' self-help group, and tied up with a local bank for loans. "It's amazing how they achieved success without government support. We'll help them in accessing better technical knowhow, cheap credit and marketing support," says a senior officer of the state horticulture department, which has given some implements and promised funds for green houses. Other villages across Assam too are now keen to emulate Kusumbil's dream.
