As the curtain comes down this weekend on the great Indian elections, another long-drawn-out drama also seems likely to reach its finale. The last six weeks have marked a Bollywood-obsessed nation's longest separation ever from its favourite pastime—watching movies on the big screen. In early April, the United Producers Distributors Forum (UPDF), with Aamir Khan and SRK as its high-profile brand ambassadors, declared war on multiplex owners. Demanding their "fair share" of revenues from ticket sales, they refused to release any new films from April 4. What was expected to be a short-lived, petty squabble grew into a stretched-out battle, marked by nasty ego clashes. But, as we go to press, the unprecedented deadlock seems to be heading for a climax. Hectic negotiations are on and an amicable settlement may well be round the corner. "We are engaging with each other. It could be this Friday or another couple of weeks," says Siddhartha Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures.
