Union home minister P. Chidambaram’s honeymoon is finally over. As the UPA government plunged into a major crisis after his December 9 midnight announcement on Telangana—an occasion for which special permission was sought for TV OB vans to make their way up Raisina Hill—the knives were out in the Congress. Instead of quelling tempers in Telangana, the move has provoked a counter-agitation in the rest of Andhra Pradesh, which threatens to spiral out of control. Meanwhile, government managers are worried that unless the Telangana demand is swiftly buried, the smaller states issue could grow Frankenstein’s monster-like, mushrooming in the rest of the country. Of more immediate concern is that with Andhra Pradesh sharply divided, the party’s 33 MPs—the lynchpin of the UPA government—could all be compelled by their constituents to resign, putting the government in jeopardy.

With reports coming in that trs chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao was nowhere near death on the 11th day of his fast, and that much of the pro-unity agitation playing out on the streets is being sponsored by the late ysr’s son Jaganmohan Reddy and his cohorts, including the infamous Bellary brothers, the question Congressmen are asking is: what sort of political intelligence did the home minister provide colleagues in the core committee which met on December 9, hours before the announcement?
