A staccato broke the silence of a residential area in Green Park this afternoon as four armed men jumped out of a white Bolero and opened fire at a car in the upmarket colony in south Delhi.
Four men clad in bulletproof vests got off their car and began firing indiscriminately at a black Honda Accord at around 4 pm.
The residents, some of whom were enjoying their evening tea, rushed to their balconies only to find that an encounter was underway between Delhi Police and a gang of bank robbers.
The encounter came as an opportunity for residents and some began recording it on their mobiles while others ran for cover.
Rahul, who has a mobile with a high resolution camera, began filming the entire encounter.
"I have never seen such a thing. It was a one time opportunity for me. So I recorded the entire incident in my mobile," he said.
Another resident Rakesh Sharma said he was returning from M-block market when he heard couple of gun shots like sounds. "I ran back to the market fearing it a Batla House like thing and only came after the encounter finished," Sharma said.
When the firing stopped, one of the policeman broke the window on the driver's side of the black Honda Accord with his baton. The four of the occupants of vehicle, alleged to be the bank robbers, were then taken out and frisked by the policemen.
"All of them seemed to be injured. They were taken out and sent in two different vehicles," said Ajit, a local resident.
He added that encounter lasted for about five minutes as against the claims of DCP(South) H G S Dhaliwal who said the duration of the shootout was around 10-12 minutes.
"I was standing in the balcony taking tea when I heard cracker sounds coming from close range. It was only when I saw some bullet proof vests wearing individuals firing at a car that I realised it was an encounter," said Rahul, who runs a hotel in Paharganj.
