Advocating the need to pay more heed to the health of women, the half of society, legendary actor Sharmila Tagore says, "It is a matter of concern."
With the ratio skewed having higher number of males (980 females in contrast with 1000 males on an average), it was not for the female to clamour for her right, to enable her having better nutritional intakes and proper health, but the family, the society and everybody, the ‘Apur Sansar’ actor said at the launch of a leading doctor’s book today.
Rueing that a woman expires during childbirth in India every 10 minutes, Sharmila said, “Isn’t it a matter of concern that a mother has to die after bearing pain for so many months due to child birth complications!”
“And this in contrast with 51 babies born in the country in every minute,” she said.
Sharmila was speaking at the launch of a book ‘Janani’ by prominent gynecologist Dr Goutam Khastogir on maternity issues.
Dr Khastogir said women have some unique health issues which need to be recognized and given due care by society to prevent mortality rate of women including of malnutrition and maternity-related problem and proper knowledge on these issues are paramount also to minimize gender abuse.
