On August 30, 2003, Anju, then 26, made athletics history for India at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. The lanky long jumper from Kerala became the first Indian medallist at the World Athletics Champion­sh­ips as she bagged the bronze by clearing 6.70m. Two years later, she won gold at the World Athletics Final in Monte Carlo, but Paris remains a pioneering feat.

Two days later, Anju won the gold medal at Yokohama Super Track and Field meet in Tokyo, beating Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva of Russia.

Friday 9 SeptemberIndia's ace long jumper Anju Bobby George came up with a spectacular jump of 6.75 metres to win silver in the women's long jump event at the World Athletics Final at Monaco. Anju's season's best effort was enough to fetch her silver in the elite event behind Russia's Tatyana Kotova who jumped 6.83. Grace Upshaw of US took the bronze medal with a leap of 6.67 mt.This performance comes less than a week of Anju's gold winning effort of 6.65 metre at the 16th Asian Athletic Championship in Incheon, South Korea.

Anju Bobby George gave her best in her first leap to set a new Indian record but failed to sustain the momentum and ended up sixth in the women's long jump at Athens. Anju's hopes of an Olympic medal were dashed after she leaped to a career-best 6.83, which was not good enough for a podium finish in a strong field lead by the Russians.

India's hopes of another Olympic medal were dashed after she leaped to a career-best 6.83 in the first jump, bettering her own national record of 6.74m, but could not repeat the performance in the subsequent jumps and finished at the sixth position. The event was a complete dominance of the Russian athletes, who claimed all the three places on the Olympic podium for the first time.

She managed a best effort of 6.60 m in the qualifying round and made it to the medal round in 11th place out of the 12 jumpers who got through. The qualifying mark was set at 6.75m but with only seven athletes managed to achieve that, the next five best performers made it to the finals.
