Sloppy Tackling Rarely is Dhoni so overshadowed on home turf. The tone for this ‘friendly’, though, was set early by Drogba claiming ignorance of the captain’s name. And Baichung needn’t smirk, the ex-Chelseaman didn’t know India had a national footie team.

Straight Drive To Port Of Call Every item in Rahul Bose’s and Bhaichung’s under-the-hammer-bound motherlode of sports memorabilia, including willows from Sachin, Lara and Dhoni, has a story. The children of the Andamans, to whom the proceeds go, wait to hear them.

Indian football broke its long drought for an international title by claiming the Nehru Cup on home turf. Baichung Bhutia suddenly has competition when it comes to public recognition as English coach Bob Houghton and the national team players gained some dedicated fan-following as a result. While #143 may not exactly be a ranking to take any pride in, the fact remains that India's standing in the game improved from #157 in December 2006. The year was also significant for the launch of the I-League, a new version of the National Football League which ran for more than a decade.  Also See: A Long Time Coming
