Saturday 17 SeptemberA recent book has caused ripples in the politucal circles since extracts from it were first published in the Times of London on Saturday. The Mitrokhin Archive, Volume II: The KGB and the World alleges: "It seemed like the entire country [India] was for sale; the KGB — and the CIA — had penetrated the Indian government. " The KGB was more successful than the CIA, partly " because of its skill in exploiting the corruption that became endemic under Indira Gandhi’s regime. Suitcases full of banknotes were said to be routinely taken to her house and one of her opponents claimed that Mrs Gandhi did not even return the cases." The influence peaked at the time of the Bangladesh crisis and the book has some rather interesting accounts of how among the most time-consuming activities of the KGB in India was the preparation for Brezhnev’s state visit in 1973 and how they had to ensure that he was received with what appeared to be rapturous enthusiasm.Given that he was such a dreary orator, it was no easy task.

It was a love affair that cut across nationalities—she from Italy, he from India. They met as students in England in 1964, fell in love and were married in 1969. For a long while they lived away from the public glare—he an airline pilot, she a housewife. When he joined politics, she was beside him—reluctantly. When he was assassinated, she stayed on to lay claim to the Nehru-Gandhi legacy.
