Harbhajan Singh

There’s the exemplary figure of Nathan Lyon—as potent as a strike fast bowler—and then there’s a void. The world of off-spin bowling is going through a lean phase—just look at the trials of England’s Dom Bess. Our mind wanders to Harbhajan Singh, forever probing with his loops and flats, snatcher of ecstasy from the jaws of despondency, a man with almost 700 international wickets. Therefore, the news that the Punjab government withdrew his name from the Khel Ratna award drew outrage. Then Bhajji, in a new, calm avatar, set the record straight: the award considers performances in the last three years (he last played for India in 2015).

We are already eyeing this left-armed tearaway as future prospect, but Arjun Tendulkar has set his sights on the Home of Cricket. On a rained-out day at Lord’s, T junior lent a hand to the groundsmen, then switched to selling radios. Bhajji, whose measured commentary is a pleasure, found him thus.

A Milanese wedding out of reach of most Indian photo lenses was followed by Finland’s frosty hush for a honeymoon. But it was at the wedding reception in Mumbai that friends and colleagues had their pound of fun. Harbhajan, Yuvraj and Ashish Nehra ran in faster in the past, but that day their footwork was limited to the nimbleness of bhangra.

Though one is tempted to ask why Harbhajan was on the sets of Nach Baliye and not on the pitch (at least the practice pitch), one can’t deny the dance of the happy shades in the eyes of Bhajji and his wife Geeta Basra. The reason for that, and their ‘sizzling’ dance on the show as guests, is the lady in the middle—daughter Hinaya Heer.

Rick’s The Cafe Will Bhajji and Geeta Basra pedal away in a rickshaw? The flowery three-wheeler, rigged up for the duo’s sangeet (they are to marry on October 29), points to Harbhajan’s tasste in kitsch. But this one can safely say: that Bollywood luck has finally shone on the spinner so out of favour in recent years. His decent performance against the Proteas proves that.

Lionheart How brilliant was it that the man who singlehandedly, and without complaint, bore the burden of a billion expectations through decades of futility was afforded the chance to unfurl the flag he had shed blood and tears for after finally winning the one prize that had eluded him for so long? Was there a more poignant moment this year?

This must be perhaps the worst phase of Harbhajan Singh's career. Before the on-going Test, since January 2010, he had played 17 Tests for 61 wickets at a strike rate of 84 and an average of 40. As a mere shadow of his old self, all he got was one wicket in the first innings of the second Test against England but that was enough to take him past the great Curtly Ambrose into the Top Ten wicket takers in Test cricket with 406 wickets at an average of 32.11. Ambrose, though, had a fantastic average of 20.99 for his 405 wickets in the same number of Tests: 98

No Tears Over Spilt Booze A feud of Wasim-Waqar intensity it isn’t. It’s hard to picture Bhajji at the head of a ‘rebellion’ against, arguably, the most beloved of Indian captains. But Dhoni’s affinity with his hot-tempered offie has to have dipped a couple of pegs. Unprincipled rumour-mongering? You betcha.
