Zohra Sehgal, 102, theatre, film and TV doyenne. Her 70-yr career spanned early work with Uday Shankar’s iconic dance troupe and 1946 Cannes winner Neecha Nagar to feisty grandma roles in recent hits.

People paying last respects to the mortal remains of Zohra Sehgal in New Delhi.
In a conversation with Khushwant Singh published in the Telegraph in 2004, Zohra Sehgal had said: "When I go to sleep, I try to keep myself smiling. So that when I die, I have a smile on my lips. And I want electric cremation. I don’t want any poems or fuss after that. And for heaven’s sake, don’t bring back my ashes. Flush them down the toilet if the crematorium refuses to keep them. I tell all, if they tell you Ammi is dead, or my friends, ki Zohraji mar gayi, I want you to give a big laugh. Think about the funny things. My funny face."

Rest in peace

The Revenge of She ‘I’ll stick the first one to ask about the 100 candles,’ birthday girl Zohra Sehgal thunders. That drawn blade, the daggers in her eyes and a steely truth to the threat. You would think it was opening night at the Prithvi.
