When we were little in the ’80s and Anup Jalota was a star, we still saw him as a podgy fellow with a mellow voice. Now that he has Jasleen Matharu as companion in Bigg Boss 12, how many are stumped? Jasleen is a singer, Jalota’s ‘disciple’ and...but then surely we’re not as crass as to jealously repeat the crude trolls? Believers in peace, we’d say: very well done, Anup.

Check out those girls first, left to right. The floral printed dress with the cheery headband, the one in the garb of an Arab belly dancer (but looking too happy to be seductive), and the ubiquitous Punjabi lass who swings, then swings some more. Do they dance the same step? We wouldn’t know, but in the foreground is bhaijaan Salman, wearing one of those singlets he so lovingly endorses, pitching for Bigg Boss 12 at Nerul, Goa. Top quote: “People used to ask me when I’m getting married.... I think I will marry Bigg Boss.” Now, that’s blazingly witty!

The randomness in which social media bestows a month’s superstardom on people is a wondrous thing to behold. Like South Korean pop songs/dance videos that involve little song and dance.... The latest addition is samurai Kyutaro, from the Japanese movie Neko Zamurai. Hired by a rival, dog-loving gang, he is tasked to kill a rival’s cat, but refuses after meeting the fluffy blob. Now that’s the cutest you’d let a warrior be.

In this image made from an undated cartoon broadcast on state-run al-Iraqiya TV in Iraq, a cartoon character portrayed as a member or a supporter of the Islamic State group sings a song. Television networks across the Middle East have begun airing cartoons and comedy programs using satire to criticize the group and its claim of representing Islam. And while not directly confronting their battlefield gains, the shows challenge the legitimacy of the Islamic group and chips away at the fear some have that they are unstoppable. The Arabic writing on the flag reads, "One Arab nation," top, and "Having an eternal message." "ISIS" on the cartoon character's head cover is the outdated acronym of the group.

And why not, if it brings in honest income, now that the Kerala paceman is forced by circumstances of his own making to let those lethal outswingers waste away in a house of horrors. Ye Hai Aashiqui on UTV Bindaas focused on the issue of honour killings. KBC also reflected many social concerns in the new season. Laakhon Mein Ek on Star followed on the themes set by Satyamev Jayate. Serials began entering the hybrid zone mixing entertainment with a social responsibility, however surface and facile.

24 started with a bang as the most expensive Indian TV show but could not fit into the popular Indian TV jargon.

Comedy Nights With Kapil was liberally used to promote Bollywood movies. Became the launchpad for many a hit.

Food-based shows caught on after the success of various avatars of Masterchef. The cooking reality show also hooked in the kids with a junior version. Connected Hum Tum on Zee gave a new spin to the reality show format with ordinary women shooting their own private moments for public consumption.

Historicals got a touch of religion and mythology in serial after serial like Maharana Pratap, Rani Lakshmi Bai and Jodha Akbar. Buddha got into a controversy in Nepal for showing that he was born in India. Ekta Kapoor’s Mahabharat got talked for its cinematography and grand mounting than what it did with the story itself.
