Sparkling eyes staring out in eager wonderment, ears pricked up in anticipation of a treat, Chloe and Valentine seem to be born poseurs before the camera. Then there is Shikhar Dhawan’s comforting hand on their smooth coats. With cricket consigned to an aching memory, Shikhar wanted more paws on his parquet, when these two sleekly handsome things happened along. With his love for dogs getting to be as famous as that slashing square drive, he should be wary now of C and V running him out on home turf.

The shutdown has weighed light on cricketers around the world—no 100-tonne expectations slowing their steps, no lugging kits around, no soul-wearying schedule of the IPL. Some teach their kids the rudiments of batsmanship; some give their dogs necessary catch practice. Dhoni, an outdoorsy man, has repaired to his Ranchi farmhouse, where we see him take a leisurely run with daughter Ziva, who is clearly giving her all in a sprint. The highlight: she trundles off the grassy lawn, protesting tiredness, as MS calls her back in vain. Our Cap’n Cool gets his comeuppance.

The lockdown is playing out in various ways in different minds—new disclosures, new fads, a hairpin turn to boldness. Thus, Kapil Dev declares Viv Richards and M.S. Dhoni as his ‘heroes’ and, by way of admiration, sports a careful stubble, well-shorn hair and a sharp suit. Would Sir Viv ever wear a jacket a size short so that the puffs out towards gully and square leg? Never in your life. But then, in these locked days, where are you going Paaji? Never mind this ill-advised sally, you remain our hero. Always.

Most cricketers have favourite subjects of torment—an opposiiton against whom they do no wrong, cracking centuries, whipping off fifers and, crucially, getting out of horrible lean patches with one of the former. For Aussie whirlwind bat Glenn Maxwell, that team is India. Imagine our surprise then, when we learnt the preference runs deep—this, below, is Maxwell after he got engaged to his long-time girlfriend. Her name? Vini Raman, a pharmacist based in Melbourne. Let up a bit on those sixes, hey Maxi?
