Even though unemployment is low, the economy is growing and U.S. auto sales are near historic highs, GM is cutting thousands of jobs in a major restructuring aimed at generating cash to spend on innovation. Thousands of Opel workers walked off their jobs to attend a mass rally at the automaker's headquarters, protesting against General Motors' decision to scrap the sale of a majority in Opel to Canadian auto parts maker Magna International Inc. and Russian lender Sberbank.
