Rajinkanth’s political entry on the last day of 2017 capped a year of churning and confusion post-Jayalalithaa as the state lurched from one spectacle to another.
Chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Palaniswami and his deputy Panneerselvam, placed a wreath at the memorial, where Jayalalithaa was laid to rest in December 2016.
The aim of the Dhinakaran group is to topple the government before the general council is convened (to unseat Sasikala as general secretary) and the two factions petition the Election Commission to retrieve the Two Leaves symbol.
Removal of Sasikala and making it public was the last minute precondition imposed by the OPS camp which delayed the merger by a couple of hours but that too was accepted by the EPS camp and announced soon after the merger ceremony.
Following the merger, O.Panneerselvam, a three-time CM of Tamil Nadu will hold the position of Deputy CM while Edappadi Palaniswami will continue to remain the Chief Minister of the state.
Panneerselvam, who is scheduled to leave for Madurai on Sunday to attend a meeting there, was expected to elicit the opinion of the faction leaders here to arrive at any firm view on the merger issue.
