Some 25 states in the country have already reduced the excise duty on fuel and provided relief to people, the former Maharashtra chief minister said.
The government stated that the idea behind reducing the excise duty is to give a fillip to the economy which is recovering from the onslaught of the pandemic.

On Monday, the petrol price was hiked by 29 paise per litre and diesel by 30 paise, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.
On Saturday, petrol price in Mumbai hit an all-time high of Rs 102.36 per litre, while diesel cost Rs 94.45/litre, highest among the metros. In Delhi, the petrol prices touched a whopping Rs 96.12 a litre, while diesel is being sold at Rs 86.98 per litre.
Petrol price has been hiked by 27 paise per litre and diesel by 23 paise, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.
The price of petrol, which had already crossed the Rs 100-mark in several cities in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, breached the psychological barrier in Mumbai on Saturday.
The price increase led to petrol rates crossing the Rs 100-mark in more places of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Association president Suneet Bagai said if there is no positive decision by the government then the association will go on an indefinite strike from April 25.
The statement assumes significance in view of the outcry over the rise in petrol price for the past over one year that touched Rs 100 per litre in some states.
The Jammu and Kashmir Congress also said, 'this regime is acting brazenly in adding to the woes of people'.
