The pump price of petrol in Delhi, which fell to Rs 103.97 a litre at 6 a. m. on November 4 from previous day's Rs 110.04 a litre, remains at the same level. The diesel prices also remained unchanged in the capital at Rs 86.67 a litre.
Across the country as well, the price of the fuel largely remained unchanged on Thursday but the retail rates varied depending on the level of local taxes.
After the centre's announcement to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel, all the BJP-ruled states have also announced cuts on VAT and other taxes on petroleum products, excluding Punjab and Odisha.
Many BJP-ruled states such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tripura, Goa, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Assam, Bihar and Haryana have slashed VAT on fuel after the Centre cut petrol and diesel prices by Rs 5 and Rs 10 respectively.
BJP West Bengal state unit vice-president Raju Banerjee said the party will take out a rally from its headquarters at around 1 pm on Monday.
In Punjab, petrol will now cost Rs 95 per litre and diesel Rs 83.75 per litre. A decision in this regard was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
AAP leader and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia demanded that the central government should reduce fuel prices, saying that states have fewer resources.
Both central government and states reduced tax on fuel on the eve of Diwali, while BJP-ruled states announced a further tax cut today.
The central government announced on Wednesday evening that it would be reducing central excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 respectively.
Since states charge local sales tax or VAT not just on the base price but also on the excise duty levied by the centre, the total incidence of price reduction is higher.
The government stated that the idea behind reducing the excise duty is to give a fillip to the economy which is recovering from the onslaught of the pandemic.
This is the second consecutive day of the price hike. There was no change in rates on October 18 and 19, prior to which prices were hiked by 35 paise per litre each on four straight days.
Monday and Tuesday did not see any change in prices of petrol and diesel. Prior to this, the prices of both the fuel rose by 35 paise each for four consecutive days.
At the time of publishing, petrol in Delhi was being sold at Rs 105.49 per litre and diesel at Rs 94.22 per litre. In Mumbai, petrol rose to Rs 111.43 per litre and diesel to 102.15 per litre.
