Numerous petitions challenging the Centre’s IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, are currently pending in various high courts across the country.
The court was hearing a plea claiming non-compliance with the Centre's new IT Rules by the microblogging platform.
The Centre, in an affidavit filed in the high court, said any non-compliance amounts to breach of provisions of IT Rules, leading to Twitter losing its immunity conferred under the IT Act.
Under the new IT rules, large digital platforms have to publish periodic compliance reports every month.
Delhi High Court on Monday refused to stay the Centre's new IT rules, stating that it was not in agreement with the petitioners on passing such an order at this stage.
It leaves the microblogging site without a grievance official as mandated by the new IT rules
The Digital News Publishers Association, comprising 13 outlets challenged the constitutional validity of the Information Technology rules 2021.
The special branch of UNHRC on June 11 had raised concern around number of provisions of the new IT rules .
