Hyundai Creta remains intouchable at top, occupying more than 72 percent segment share.

  • Second and third spot occupied by S-Cross and Duster, both separated by a major difference.

  • Nissan Kicks’ MoM demand improves, Captur’s drops

  • The Hyundai Creta has been a volume driver for the Korean carmaker and the story hasn’t changed one bit in the month of March either. The Creta’s demand is significantly more than its rivals like the S-Cross and the latest entrant to the segment, the Nissan Kicks. It currently presides over more than 72 percent of the market space and that has only increased in 2019 when compared to last year. Let’s look at the sales figure analysis for a better understanding of the demand of SUVs in the compact segment.

Creta remains consistently dominant: The Hyundai Creta has been steadfast in its consistency and despite a new entrant (Nissan Kicks), it has only gained its foothold in the segment. Last year, it occupied over 65 percent of the segment volume but this year it’s more than 72 percent. Even the average monthly numbers of the Creta are higher than the combined mid-size SUV segment sales, which includes the Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV500.

Maruti S-Cross retains second spot: The Maruti S-Cross might have the second spot but it has a massive gap to bridge with the Creta. While the month on month sales numbers increased in March, it lost more than 10 percent segment share in 2019 when compared with the 2018 numbers.

Renault Duster leads the Captur: Despite being the older car in Renault’s lineup, the Duster is still more popular than the Captur. The Duster was last updated in 2016 whereas the Captur was launched late in 2017. The Duster registered an increased monthly demand of more than 57 percent while losing a minor 3 percent segment share this year in comparison to 2018. The Captur, on the contrary, registered a 38 percent month-on-month drop but saw a slight hike in the year-on-year numbers. Overall, it’s still the Duster that is the more popular offering, with decent average sales of more than 800 units taking it to the third spot.

Nissan Kicks: Launched in January 2019, the Nissan Kicks is the best selling model in the Japanese carmaker’s India range. It has seen a growth rate of 15.1 percent and occupies 4.43 percent share in the segment. Whether it registers stable growth in the future with the entry of the Kia SP Concept and VW T-Cross will make for an interesting watch.
