Mumbai, 17 June 2016:

Commenting on the Essar-related reports that have appeared in certain sections of the media today, Mr SS Khandwawala, Head-Security (Intelligence & Vigilance), said: "Mr Uppal has concocted a completely false and baseless story involving us in order to make extortionist demands from us in the name of an ex-employee. When made to realise that we have absolutely no interest in acceding to such illegal demands, he is now looking to defame and pressurise us by using the media. We intend to proceed against him to the full extent of the law unless he tenders a public apology and unconditionally withdraws these baseless allegations. Essar has never itself conducted or authorised any person, including Mr Basit Khan, to conduct any phone surveillance. We welcome a full and complete investigation of these allegations as also of Mr Uppal’s own background and role in this matter."
