The Uttar Pradesh police on Friday donated Rs 70 lakh to the family of slain inspector Subodh Kumar Singh who was killed in Bulandshahr violence on December 3.

"In addition to the Rs. 50 lakh compensation offered by UP government, we too have donated Rs. 70 lakh on our own will," ADG, Meerut zone, Prashant Kumar told news agency ANI.

On December 3, 2018, Police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and a few other policemen were trying to control the mob when they were outnumbered and the situation went out of control. Mr Singh was hit with a stone by the mob, which went on to chase his SUV, corner it in the fields and shoot him dead.

Singh was also the Investigating Officer (IO) in the Mohammed Akhlaq lynching case in 2015 in Dadri which hit headlines. Akhlaq was lynched by an angry mob on suspected slaughtering of cow and consuming its meat.

A mob of some 400 people violently rampaged through the Chingrawathi village, apparently after cow carcasses were found strewn in a jungle nearby.

The mob set dozens of vehicles on fire, hurled stones and even fired from guns at the police, who also retaliated with gunfire.
