Karnataka has suspended the arrival of flights, trains and vehicles from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to contain the spread of novel coronavirus in the state.

State Law Minister Madhu Swamy on Thursday said that a spike has been observed in COVID-19 cases after the domestic flights were resumed on May 25.

"We are mainly restricting the air traffic from Maharashtra as 30-40 per cent of the people who have arrived from the state have tested positive. Second would be Gujarat and Tamil Nadu," he said.

"Besides them, we are restricting traffic coming in from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan as well. The incoming traffic coming in Bengaluru is huge and more than we anticipated," Swamy said.

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are the worst-affected states accounting for the maximum number of COVID-19 cases in India.

On Thursday, seventy-five new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Karnataka, taking the total number of infections in the state to 2,493, the health department.

With 47 deaths and 809 discharges, there are 1,635 active corona cases in the state, the department said in its mid-day bulletin.

Twenty-eight patients have been discharged so far on Thursday.
