Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “bhrashtachari” remarks against their late father and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, saying Modi’s karma “awaited him” and that he had insulted a pious man.

"Modi ji, the battle is over. Your karma awaits you. Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

He also hit out at Modi with “all my love and a huge hug”.

Modi on Saturday had targeted Rahul Gandhi saying, "Your father was termed 'Mr Clean' by his courtiers, but his life ended as 'bhrashtachari (corrupt) number one’”.

However, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra came down more heavily on Modi, saying the Prime Minister had insulted a “gentle and pious man’s sacrifice” through his “uncontrolled eccentricity”.

She added that the nation never forgives the frauds.

“The Prime Minister who shames the martyrdom of the soldiers by begging for votes in their name has also insulted the sacrifice of a gentle and pious man through his uncontrolled eccentricity yesterday,” she tweeted.

“The reply would be given by Amethi’s public for whom Rajiv Gandhi laid down his life. Modi ji, this nation never forgives the frauds,” she added.
