A fine start by Mayank Agarwal (57) and KL Rahul set up Punjab Kings perfectly but RCB pulled things back to qualify for the IPL 2021 playoffs.
Punjab Kings failed to capitalise on the bright start by openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal to lose by six runs against RCB today. The win helped RCB qualify for the IPl 2021 playoffs as the third-best team with 16 points. CSK and DC have already qualified for the playoffs. Rahul and Mayank gave PBKS a perfect platform but RCB bowlers made a brilliant comeback to win the game.
Virat Kohli (RCB): It feels amazing. Winning eight out of 12 is a great campaign and it will give us more opportunities to finish in the top two. Rahul and Mayank batted well but we knew that if we can get them, we can come back. Siraj was brilliant, Harshal’s inclusion has been outstanding.
KL Rahul (PBKS): I would say it was a par score. When a guy like Maxwell comes in with that sort of form, it makes it difficult. We lacked someone who would score those 30-40 quick runs.
That's it. RCB have done it. They have beaten PBKS by six runs to consolidate their position at the third spot.
Oh no! Disaster. Shah Rukh Khan falls short of the crease for 16 in the first ball of the last over. PBKS need 19 runs from 5 balls.
Shah Rukh Khan has proven in the past how dangerous he can be and PBKS will look up to him today also. PBKS 146/5 after 19 overs, need 19 in the last over.
And now Markram. After two wickets in the last over, PBKS lose another in the form of Markram for 20. Shah Rukh Khan at the crease. PBKS 128/5 after 17 overs.
Two wickets in an over for Chahal. He gets big Mayank and Sarfaraz in the 16th over. Big moment in the match. Mayank departs for 57, while Sarfaraz for duck. PBKS 121/4 in 15.5 overs
100 up for Punjab Kings in 14th over. 63 needed in the last overs. Can they do it? Can Mayank do it ? Mayank (52*), Markram (2*). PBKS 102/2 after 14 overs.
Pooran's rough patch with the bat continues. The West Indian hasn't been that effective for PBKS this IPL, goes for just 3. PBKS 100/2 after 13 overs. Mayank still going strong at 51.
Fifty for Mayank Agarwal. He needs to continue till the end to take PBKS home.
Gone! RCB get the breakthrough. Rahul departs for 39, caught by Harshal, off Shahbaz. PBKS 92/1 after 11 overs. Pooran joins Agarwal (47*) in the middle.
Just the start PBKS wanted. Rahul (31*) and Agarwal (20*) ensured they don't lose a wicket in the Powerplay and they need to capitalise on this. PBKS 56/0 after 7 overs.
Rahul (16*) and Agarwal (13*) have started in the same vein just like in their previous match. Key is to hold onto the momentum, PBKS 33/0 after 4 overs.
A lot will depend on the kind of start Rahul and Mayank give to PBKS today. They have done it in the past and if they can do it today, the match is on. PBKS 3/0 after 1 over.
This is the highest score at Sharjah this season. Also Moises Henriques' figures of 4-0-12-3 is his best in the IPL.
Four wickets in the last three overs for PBKS to pull things up. Had it not been Maxwell-De Villiers' 73-runMaci partnership for the fourth wicket, RCB wouldn't have crossed the 160-run mark. Maxwell (57) and De Villiers (23). RCB finish at 164/7 in 20 overs.
Fifty for Maxwell and it has come at the right time for RCB.
Maxwell is taking on the PBKS attack. Two sixes and a four in the last three overs for the Australian. De Villiers also joins the party with a six and a four off Shami. Maxwell (43*), De Villiers (17*). RCB 132/3 after 17 overs.
A couple of sixes from Maxwell off Harpreet to ease the pressure. Otherwise, RCB have been kept quiet by the PBKS bowlers. RCB 93/3 after 14 overs.
RCB in trouble. After Kohli and Christian in his last over, Moises comes back to send back Padikkal for 40. Dramatic collapse. Maxwell and De Villiers in middle. RC 73/3 after 11.5 overs.
RCB have able to garner just 12 runs in the last four overs with the loss of two wickets. Credit goes to PBKS bowlers to stem down the run flow. RCB 68/2 after 10 overs. Padikkal (38*) and Maxwell (1*) at the crease.
Two in two balls. After Kohli, its now Christian for duck. RCB 68/2 after 9.5 overs. Moises on a hattrick.
Moises does the trick for PBKS, picks up priced Kohli for 25, clean bowled. Padikkal still there at 38 not out. RCB 68/1 after 9.4 overs.
In the last four matches, RCB have score 50-plus thrice in the Powerplays.
55-0 v CSK,
48-1 v MI
54-1 v RR
55-0 v PBKS (Today)
Kohli will be very pleased with how things have gone till now. Obviously, RCB would like to make most of the dropped opportunities. Padikkal (35*) and Kohli (19*). RCB 57/0 after 7 overs.
Punjab Kings have put down Padikkal and Kohli once each inside the Powerplay. Too costly!
Three boundaries, a six and a dropped catch in the last three overs. RCB are cruising smoothly with Padikkal (22) and Kohli (10). RCBN 34/0 after 4 overs.
PBKS start off with spin. Markram bowls the opening over, concedes just five which included a four from Kohli. Padikkal (1*), Kohli (4*). RCB 5/0 after 1 over.
Team batting second have enjoyed more success in Sharjah this season winning four matches. Only once team batting first has won.
If RCB win today, they will move to 16 points and virtually seal the third playoff spot. If PBKS goes over the line, they will enter top four displacing KKR to fifth.
KL Rahul (PBKS): Not disappointed at losing the toss as we wanted to bowl first. We have three changes in our side. Fabian Allen is injured, so Harpreet Brar comes in. Sarfaraz Khan is in for Deepak Hooda. Moises Henriques in for Nathan Ellis.
Virat Kohli (RCB): We will bat first. The wicket looks nice and hard. No changes in our side.
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli(c), Devdutt Padikkal, Srikar Bharat(w), Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers, Daniel Christian, George Garton, Shahbaz Ahmed, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal
Punjab Kings: KL Rahul(w/c), Mayank Agarwal, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran, Sarfaraz Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Moises Henriques, Harpreet Brar, Mohammed Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh
Royal Challengers Bangalore have won the toss and will bat first.
The conditions have really cooled down and there is quite a lot of breeze. The boundary on one side is huge. The par score on this wicket is going to be something around 130, says Mathew Hayden.
With Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians both losing on Saturday, Royal Challengers Bangalore are looking good to win a knockout berth and beating Punjab Kings in Sharjah Sunday afternoon will only enhance their endeavour. But Punjab Kings have a new spring in their feet having beaten Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday and seem to have sorted out their middle-order problems. Punjab Kings (10 points from 12 matches) are sitting fifth in the IPL 2021 points table. They are level with No. 4 KKR but have an inferior run-rate. PBKS have the arsenal to overturn their run-rate with skipper KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal in good form. Fabian Allen and Shahrukh Khan looked good in the last match and in the absence of Chris Gayle, they should play a crucial role with the bat against RCB. Mohammad Shami, ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh have been bowling well but will be up against a formidable RCB batting line-up where Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal and Glen Maxwell have all scored runs. RCB have 14 points from 11 matches and a win today will help them retain their No. 3 position. Follow live crickets scores of Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Punjab Kings here.
