A South African man and his fiancee have been detained in the United Arab Emirates because they had sex before marriage, said a media report.
Emlyn Culverwell‚ 29, and Iryna Nohai, 27 had got engaged on January 27.
When Iryna Nohai visited a doctor, complaining of stomach cramps. it was discovered that she was pregnant. Premarital sex and sex outside marriage is illegal in UAE, which is why Iryna and her fiancee Emlyn Culverwell were arrested based on the doctor's report.
According to a report by News24, the South Africa's foreign ministry has said that it is not able to help the couple as this is a matter of domestic UAE law.
Talking to the news channel, Emlyn Culverwell's mother said "the only thing they did wrong was fall in love".
The couple has not yet been charged as authorities are still carrying out tests, but if found guilty, they could face a long jail sentence, reports the BBC.
