Uttar Pradesh has reported the highest number of murder cases with a total of 4,889 cases in the year 2016, said NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) report. Accounting for 16.1% of total murder cases in the country, UP tops the chart, followed by Bihar with 8.5% cases.

Delhi, the national capital, tops the chart with highest crime rate (974.9) under IPC crimes followed by (state)Kerala (727.6) against national average of 233.6.

The data also shows a rise of 0.8% in the total incidents of "violenct crimes" country-wide. Overall, it shows an increase of 2.6%  in cognizable crime as compared to 2015, from  47,10,676  registered offences to 48,31,515 in 2016.

The data however revealed that cases of rioting has gone down by 5% in the last one year. When compared from the records of previous two years, a gradual decrease in the such cases have been registered. The year 2014 saw 66,042 incident of riots whereas it decreased by a small 1.2% in 2015 to 65,255 cases.

In the latest record titled "Crime in India 2016", tabled on Thursday by the statistics and record body that was released by Union home Minister Rajnath Singh, also showed an alarming rise of 6% in the cases of kidnapping from the year 2015 (82,999) to 2016 (88,008).

Crimes like murder, kidnapping, rioting, robbery, dacoity were put under the category of "violent crimes" in the study.

Other crime rates like robbery and dacoity have gone down by a percentage of 11.8 and 4.5 respectively.

There has been 48,31,515 cognizable crimes comprising 29,75,711 Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes and 18,55,804 Special & Local Laws (SLL) crimes reported in the year 2016, showing an increase of 2.6% over 2015 (47,10,676 cases).

During 2016, IPC crimes have increased by 0.9% and SLL crimes have increased by 5.4% over
2015.
